February 10th wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30pm Art, Film and Philosophy: Food Inc. (film) Antrim County Building, 205 E. Cayuga St, Bellaire Our nation’s food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. Filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation’s food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer. February 13th saturday from 11am to1pm Back to Basics Green Building Series Home Energy Efficiency Eco-Building Products, 130 Hall St, Traverse City Jim Barnes of Eco-Building Products and Ric Evans of Paradigm Energy Services will discuss the stimulus package for homeowners to optimize their home's energy efficiency, as well as home energy audits. Cayuga St, Bellaire Resilient communities are capable of bouncing back from adverse situations. They can do this by actively influencing and preparing for economic, social and environmental change. When times are bad they can call upon the myriad resources that make them a healthy community. Share your thoughts on how to build resilience in Northwest Lower Michigan. Cayuga St, Bellaire From its extraction through sale, use and disposal, all the stuff in our lives affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is hidden. The Story of Stuff is a fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our consumption patterns. It’ll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life. Cayuga St, Bellaire The May Farm is small, diversified family farm producing eggs, meat, dairy, wool, firewood, compost, skin care and maple syrup. The mission of The May Farm is to raise trustworthy food as close to your table as possible. Come learn about their visit to permaculture guru Joel Salatin’s Polyface farm, share your own ideas, and jam with some live music! March 10th wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30pm Art, Film and Philosophy: Elly Johnson presents the Honduras Photography & Water Project Antrim County Building, 205 E. Cayuga St, Bellaire Honduras is the second poorest country in Central America. An alarming 90% of Hondurans’ water supply is intermittent and unreliable and only 44% is effectively disinfected, especially in rural areas. Bellaire native Elly Johnson presents a compelling collection of Honduras photos and shares her plan to fund water improvements in Honduras. March 16th and 18th tuesday from 9am to 5pm, thursday from 11am to 7pm ISLAND hosts a ServSafe Certification Course in Antrim County Antrim County Building, 205 E. Cayuga St, Bellaire This ServSafe Certification Course is held in partnership withMSU Extension. MSU Extension’s 16-hour ServSafe training provides food service workers with the information and preparation they need to successfully pass the ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification Exam. This course is intended for Managers who work at restaurants, institutional settings like school cafeterias, nursing home dining halls, etc., public events where food is prepared and served, and kitchens operated by churches, civic groups and other nonprofit organizations. The cost to become ServSafe Certified is $210, which includes 2 days of instruction, a book, and the exam. $210
March 17th wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30pm Art, Film and Philosophy: ISLAND director Amanda Kik presents The Power of Residency Programs, featuring writers Holly Wren Spaulding and Stephanie Mills Antrim County Building, 205 E. Cayuga St, Bellaire There are places--hundreds of them, in fact--where artists of all disciplines can go to work on their art. Artists’ communities are not about retreat; they are about advancement. Learn about Bellaire’s new addition: the Hill Houses Residency Program, and hear readings and stories from two local authors who have benefitted from residencies. March 24th wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30pm Art, Film and Philosophy: Rachel Krino sharing Arts and Economic Development: How creativity grows communities Antrim County Building, 205 E. Cayuga St, Bellaire Rachel Krino of Bellaire, Michigan is a graphic designer and marketing consultant through her own company, Bailey Designs and Consulting. Rachel is a trained videographer and photographer, who carries a Master of Arts degree in Media Management from Ohio University. Her thesis entitled, “Digitizing Grassroots: How to start a non-profit media arts center in rural America,” is aimed at bringing arts education to underserved populations. March 31st wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30pm Art, Film and Philosophy: All the Way from Michigan, Not Mars (film) Antrim County Building, 205 E. Cayuga St, Bellaire Unlike any live music documentary you’ve ever seen, this film is an exploration of one artist’s creative process, as songwriter and musician (and native Michigander) Rosie Thomas performs with the likes of Sufjan Stevens and Denison Witmer. Reflecting Thomas’s inward-looking persona, the performances here are intimate, spare and heartfelt. The AFP series is held in partnership with Parkside Arts Council. donations accepted
