About ISLAND Programs (click here for what we've done so far) Taken as a whole, ISLAND actually offers (or will offer) up to 20 different types of programs. Some programs (such as the artist residency, the library and the sustainable living workshops) will take precedence over others (such as art internships or a sustainable living residency). Below is the listing of our current and future program types, listed in order of chronology and priority. Phase I encompasses the time preceding the purchase of land on which to house ISLAND. We are currently operating in Phase I, and are actively seeking land to purchase. During this time, which is also the start up of the organization as a whole, we will hold community events in public or rented spaces. Phase II begins upon purchase of land for use by ISLAND, and is characterized as the development phase. It also accounts for the continuation (and increase) of events and workshops, and leads into the land being ready for residents. This phase will last from two to five years, depending on the ability to raise funds for development and the speed of the actual construction. Phase III will see the integration of the residency program into the thriving ISLAND culture of workshops, events, the library, and the volunteer and internship programs. By this point, ISLAND staff, volunteers, interns and workshop attendees will have helped to develop the land to a degree suitable for use by residents. Phase I - Highest Priority Art Events - visiting authors, artists, musicians, etc; High Priority Design Workshops - classes and hands-on workshops in ecological design, pattern languages, etc; Medium and Low Priority Design Events - visiting designers, architects, etc; Phase II - Highest Priority Sustainable Living Internships - visitors to the land who trade volunteer labor for access to workshops, events and indvidual projects centered on sustainable living. High Priority Art Library - titles on inventive and interpretive art, including music, writing and film (note - the reason for the art library not being included with the others is the high cost and relative unavailability of many art books); Medium and Low Priority Art Internships - visitors to the land who trade volunteer labor for access to workshops, events and indvidual projects centered around art. Phase III - Very High Priority Artist Residency - juried artists of proven ability who seek the time and space to focus without distraction on their work; Medium and Low Priority Design Residency - juried designers of proven ability who seek the time and space to focus without distraction on their work; |
